Stone Tools Workshop
9/4/2011 - 9/4/2011
Have you ever wondered how prehistoric people made tools out of flint, quartz and other stone in the past? Have you ever been puzzled about what they can tell us about life in the past? Have you ever wanted to see how archaeological research is done?
The Discover Bute Landscape Partnership Scheme, working with The University of Glasgow and Bute Museum is delighted to present a free Archaeology Workshop about the making and analysis of prehistoric stone tools which will answer all of these questions.
The workshop will be led by Dr Nyree Finlay, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at Glasgow University, international stone tool expert and local Bute resident. It will feature two knapping sessions where you can see first hand how stone tools were made, and two analysis sessions, where you can learn what can be understood from the scientific study of stone tools. Dr Finlay is there all day and will be happy to answer any questions you have about the subject.
Entry to the event, and the rest of the nationally important museum collection held at Bute Museum, is free on the day. No booking required, just drop in to see what you fancy

Prehistoric Pottery Workshop
12/6/2011 - 12/6/2011
The Discover Bute Landscape Partnership Scheme, working with National Museum of Scotland (NMS) and Bute Museum is delighted to present another in the series of free Archaeology Workshops, this time focussing on the analysis of prehistoric pottery which will answer all of these questions.
The workshop will be led by Dr Alison Sheridan, Head of Early Prehistory at NMS and president of the prestigious Prehistoric Society. Dr Sheridan is an internationally known expert on the Neolithic and Bronze Age in particular and a great friend of Bute, having generously acted as an advisor to the Bute Museum for a number of years. The workshop is also a chance to once again see DBLPS archaeological research in action –Dr Sheridan will be examining the Bronze Age beaker pot that was recovered during Paul Duffy’s 2010 DBLPS community excavations at Scalpsie Barrow, as well as the food vessel pot that was recovered during 1903 excavations at the site. The research will form part of the publication of the site in a national journal. Entry to the event, and the rest of the nationally important museum collection held at Bute Museum, is free on the day.

Geophysics weekend
30/07/2011 - 31/07/2011
This weekend the Discover Bute Landscape Partnership Scheme will be based at St Colmac’s Stone Circle. The site is a well known landmark on the tramway walk to Ettrick Bay. Less well known is the possibility that there was a second stone circle close by, so big it had to be blown up with gunpowder to remove it!!
No trace remains in the landscape today but with the skill and experience of Alistair and Sue of Rose Geophysics we hope to track it down.
Want to help or just to look in? No problem – no cost, no booking necessary, no previous experience required and definitely no gunpowder involved! Adults, kids and families all welcome. Just drop in to the site anytime between 10am and 4pm.
Alistair and Sue will reveal the results of this project and also discuss their research on the early chapel sites of Bute at the Bute Museum on Sunday 31st July at 7 pm. Admission free
